Activating two factor authentication brings significant security benefits. Undesired people need your password and a device such as your smartphone. We allow 2FA by the following authentication methods:
- TOTP (Authenticator App like Authy)
- U2F device
- A notification on your logged-in instances such as the Nextcloud Mobile App or other browser.
- An admin code (You can’t disable this method)
You may use multiple authentication methods at once. You can for example enable Email Notifications as a backup for your main Authentication Method such as TOTP. Please generate backup codes to make sure you won’t lose control of your account.
TOTP (Authenticator App)
Many websites recommend using the Google Authenticator App on your phone. We do not recommend this. The Authy app has more options, such as being able to backup your 2FA codes. You can download the Authy app in your own store (Apple App Store, Google Play or F-Droid). Once downloaded and setup you can use the following manual to setup Authy with Proxcloud.
- Open the Proxcloud Online platform (https://cloud.proxcloud.nl).
- Enter the settings menu by pressing your avatar in the top right corner.
- Press Security in the left menu.
- Click “Enable TOTP” and follow the steps.
- You’ve enabled 2FA by an Authenticator App.
U2F Device
You can use two-factor authentication based on hardware tokens. The following devices are known to work:
- TOTP based:
- FIDO U2F based:
You can follow the steps in TOTP Authenticator App to setup your hardware token. Please select “Add U2F Device” instead of “Enable TOTP”.
Email Notification
An email notification is a very easy to setup and use 2FA method for users who haven’t used 2FA before or for those who need a backup solution for their main 2FA method. You can simply setup this 2FA method using the following manual:
- Open the Proxcloud Online platform (https://cloud.proxcloud.nl).
- Enter the settings menu by pressing your avatar in the top right corner.
- Press Security in the left menu.
- Click “Enable” underneath “Email Verification” and next to “You are not using Email as a two-factor authentication method at the moment.”
- You will now receive a confirmation code on your registred email address. Enter the code into the field.
- Press Verify
- Done! You’ve enabled Email Notification.
Notification
You can use notification as a 2FA method if you want to use, for example, the Nextcloud App or another browser to be able to confirm the login. Using the following steps you can setup this method:
- Open the Proxcloud Online platform (https://cloud.proxcloud.nl).
- Enter the settings menu by pressing your avatar in the top right corner.
- Press Security in the left menu.
- Enable: “Use two-factor authentication via Nextcloud notifications”
- That’s it!
Admin Code
If you are unable to verify with 2FA and do not have valid backup codes, please contact the Proxcloud support department. They can create a 48-hour valid 2FA code for you with which you can log in once and update the 2FA settings.
